The Toronto Prep School experience

At Toronto Prep School (TPS), the curriculum includes measures to promote student well-being, including flexible tutoring and a 10 am start time.
Many schools talk about putting students first but are too large to give students individual mentoring and support. That’s why TPS, with its small class sizes, variety of extracurricular activities, and excellent post-secondary placement rates, has become a top option for discerning parents and students.

We focus on the individual: there are no uniforms, classes are small, and students benefit from one-on-one attention from their teachers. The largest class size is 16 and the student-teacher ratio ranges from 8 to 14 students per teacher — meaning nobody gets lost in the crowd

Parents know that superior schools prepare children for all of life’s tests. That’s why TPS students take a full load of university preparatory courses covering the liberal arts and sciences. The variety of course electives is an added bonus. We offer classes in Fashion Design, Art, Drama, Communication Technology, Media Arts and Computer Science in addition to all the core courses. This preparation provides students with a broad educational background and a variety of problem-solving skills they’ll need for their future studies. Students also benefit from a specially designed curriculum, taking only four courses at a time. They balance their studies with extracurricular activities including competitive sports and fine arts.

Another TPS signature is our start time of 10 am. Research shows later starts have positive effects on academic performance and students gain health benefits from extra sleep. Days at TPS are also structured so students can get extra help from their teachers at whatever time is best for them: in the morning before class starts, after school, or even on Saturdays. TPS alumni have gone on to top universities across Canada and the world, including Ivy League schools.

Enrolled students enjoy value-added perks, including the use of a MacBook Pro with a 3 year warranty.

Our House system

The lifeblood of our spirit

All students and staff (except for the principal) are allocated to one of four Houses. Each is a member of that House for life.

The House system provides a framework for intramural, athletic, charity fundraising, and community competitions. Points are awarded for participation in all facets of school life including academic achievement, effort, good deeds, and volunteer work.

Intended to encourage individual growth and foster student relationships across all grade levels, Houses participate in school-wide contests which result in positive interactions and unity between age groups.

There are four Houses named after creatures of Greek mythology:

  • Centaur
  • Minotaur
  • Pegasus
  • Phoenix

Each House has a House Captain and Vice-Captain selected from the grade 12 student body.

Staff members are instrumental in the organization and planning of strategy and selection of House representatives.

At the end of the school year members of the House with the most House points are rewarded with an excursion.

An annual trophy is presented to the House with the most points and stays in their possession until the following year’s competition comes to a close.

Our campus

Two storeys of learning

Toronto Prep School is in the heart of midtown Toronto. Our campus is on the northeast corner of Davisville Ave. and Mt. Pleasant Rd. We have over 60,000 sq ft of learning spread over two floors. Our classrooms are bright and spacious and include specially designed spaces for physical education, personal fitness and drama.

We are fortunate to be surrounded by green spaces which we can enjoy, including June Rowlands Park, Moore Park, and the Leaside Memorial Arena.

Our off-campus facility partners include the Eglinton Grand where we hold the annual TPS Prom, Spirit/Sports Awards and Arts Night and the Ontario Science Centre for our annual commencement ceremony. We also celebrate our grade 12 graduates and their parents with a dinner dance at a restaurant.
